Why is the Minimum Heating Oil Delivery 500 Litres?

If you’ve ever ordered heating oil and wondered why there is a minimum delivery of 500 litres, you’re not alone.

At SE Fuels, our standard minimum delivery for heating oil is 500 litres. This isn’t simply an arbitrary minimum — it is linked to the way fuel is measured and delivered from our road tankers, and the regulations that govern the use of calibrated measuring equipment.

Why can’t we deliver smaller quantities?

Heating oil is delivered directly from our road tankers using approved and calibrated mechanical measuring systems. These meters are designed to accurately measure the quantity of fuel being delivered, ensuring that customers receive the amount of fuel they have paid for.

Because these measuring systems are regulated for use in trade, they have specified operating parameters, including a minimum measured quantity. UK measuring regulations state that a regulated tanker measuring system must not be used to measure quantities below the minimum measured quantity specified for that equipment.

This is an important part of protecting both customers and fuel suppliers and ensuring that fuel deliveries are measured accurately and consistently.

What does Trading Standards have to do with it?

The measurement of fuel sold by volume is subject to UK weights and measures legislation. The Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 cover measuring systems used for trade, including systems used to measure liquid fuel delivered from road tankers.

The regulations set requirements around the accuracy, calibration and use of these measuring systems. For example, tanker delivery systems must operate within their specified parameters and must not be used in circumstances where they may be prevented from measuring consistently or accurately.

Trading Standards authorities are responsible for enforcing weights and measures legislation, helping to ensure that customers can have confidence in the quantities they are charged for.

Why does SE Fuels set the minimum at 500 litres?

Our tankers and delivery systems are configured for commercial fuel deliveries, and 500 litres is our standard minimum delivery quantity for heating oil.

There are practical reasons for this too. A fuel delivery involves the cost of sending a tanker, driver and equipment to your property, regardless of whether the vehicle delivers 100 litres or 500 litres.

Setting a minimum delivery quantity allows us to operate our delivery service efficiently while continuing to provide a reliable and properly measured fuel delivery.

What if you only need a small amount?

If your tank is running low but you don't think you need 500 litres, it is still worth giving us a call.
